Extension Professional I or II (Food Safety/Food Quality)

Serving within the Research Faculty of The Institute, this position directly supports the extension, service, and economic development missions of Georgia Tech to the State of Georgia and beyond.  Primarily this position serves within the Georgia Tech MEP (Manufacturing Extension Partnership) of the Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI2).  Engineering Project Managers are responsible for initiating, conducting, reporting and follow-up of technical projects for the focused (but not exclusive) client customer base defined as the small to mid-size manufacturer (<500 employees).  EI2 Engineering Project Mgrs. are expected to manage projects independently and report measurable outcomes through internal metric reporting systems required by federal sponsors. 

This specific position will report to the Associate Director of GaMEP who manages the Process Improvement team and will be expected to have a strong background in Food Safety and Quality Assurance.  Service delivery will focus on providing assistance to Manufacturing clients within the Food Industry in all areas of Food Safety and Quality.

 Major Responsibilities:

  • Project initiation, execution, and delivery. In general, this includes, but is not limited to: evaluating client needs, facilitating groups for identifying/solving problems, collaborating with appropriate constituents to meet project objectives/requirements, assigning and/or performing project follow-up activities, and presenting project findings/recommendations.
  • Food Safety professional to assist food and beverage industry clients with the development and implementation of food safety plans and programs.
  • Work with clients to identify gaps in existing food safety programs and consult with them to develop effective corrective actions to ensure compliance.
  • Train industry clients on a wide variety of food safety regulatory and management system topics.
  • Serve as the Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership’s expert in Food Safety, HACCP, FSMA and GFSI certification systems.
  • Perform organizational administrative tasks, and other related duties, as assigned.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Food Science, Biology, Microbiology or similar with a food/agriculture focus.
  • Work Experience: Minimum 3-5 years of experience implementing food safety/quality assurance programs in a mid-to-large scale food or beverage processing facility (or equivalent combination of education and work experience).
  • Skills: This job requires working knowledge of general manufacturing processes as well as the ability to perform sales, marketing, and customer service from a consulting delivery perspective. This job also requires public speaking/presentation, process analysis and problem-solving, as well as the use of standard office equipment and specialized computer applications.  Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a reputable track record in project management with an ability to interpret/present data in logical and client-understandable fashion. Travel: Incumbents in this position are expected to travel, as needed, and remain flexible to on-site daily service delivery hours (due to client shift schedules and/or project requirements).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred Education: MBA and/or Masters Degree in a related/relevant field. 
  • Preferred Skills/Work Experience: Experience creating, updating and maintaining HACCP and pre-requisite programs.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state food safety regulations (FDA, USDA, GDA)
  • Experience with implementing and updating Food Safety Plans to meet FSMA requirements, including having obtained PCQI and/or LI certification.
  • Experience auditing food safety programs, as well as developing and implementing corrective actions.
  • Demonstrated experience in problem-solving/root cause analysis to develop food safety solutions within a food processing environment.
  • Practical experience with microbiological and environmental sampling and testing methods in a food processing facility.
  • Experience developing and delivering training on HACCP, FSMA and other food safety topics.
  • Prefer experience implementing, maintaining and internal auditing of SQF or other GFSI food safety management system.
  • Experience with ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 would be beneficial.
  • Preferred applicant backgrounds include: Experience in manufacturing-related consultative service delivery; experience as a provider of on-site project management services with a track record of measurable success; and/or background in teaching adults and course facilitation.

This position will be located in South GA (preferably Tifton, GA), but other options include Savannah, GA or Lagrange, GA.

Extension Professional I – Positions filled at this level are candidates who possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and who will be performing on a professional level.

Extension Professional II – Positions filled at this level are candidates who possess a master’s degree and three years of relevant full-time experience after degree completion; a master’s degree and five years of relevant full-time experience after degree completion; or a doctoral degree.
