The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) has recently established a new Office of Academic Effectiveness (OAE) that reports directly to the Provost.  Georgia Tech invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Assessment. This is a 12-month, non-tenure track academic faculty position at the rank of Academic Professional or Senior Academic Professional (exact rank will depend on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate). The position reports to the Associate Provost for Academic Effectiveness (AP-AE) and serves in a leadership role within OAE.  OAE has been established to oversee a comprehensive assessment, accreditation, and institutional effectiveness process in support of Georgia Tech’s mission and vision.  More information about OAE may be found at:  http://www.provost.gatech.edu/office-academic-effectiveness.

Director of Assessment Responsibilities

The director will provide leadership, expertise, and support for Georgia Tech’s assessment efforts.  Specific responsibilities are as follows:

  • Define, implement, and document best practices for assessment that are in alignment with Georgia Tech’s mission and strategic priority of continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Associate Provost for Academic Effectiveness, Deans, Vice Provosts, and other Institute leadership on matters related to assessment and institutional effectiveness.
  • Build effective, collaborative relationships with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students as well as external governing bodies, accreditation organizations, and similar institutions to continuously enhance the value of assessment.
  • Coordinate comprehensive outcomes assessment plans and processes for all academic units and degree programs offered. This process will include the student learning and program outcomes; assessment of performance towards these outcomes using a variety of direct and indirect assessment methods; and the use of assessment results to make continuous improvements.
  • Provide guidance to faculty and academic units (colleges, schools, departments, and academic support units) on unit-level assessment plans and processes and consult with academic support units on assessment plans.
  • Utilize information from the Institute's periodic student, alumni, employer surveys, and national surveys.
  • Use assessment data to support the Institute's academic planning, as well as periodic review of academic programs.
  • Participate in the development of staff, academic professionals, administrative personnel, technical personnel, and student employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Experience and Education

The Director should have a clear understanding of the trends and issues related to academic assessment and accreditation in higher education, ideally within the context of a research university. The minimum experience required for this position includes the following:

  • An earned doctorate in a discipline that provides rigorous preparation in quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • At least four years of professional experience in higher education assessment, institutional research, and/or administration, preferably in an institution-wide, research-university setting
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate and work effectively with diverse faculty and staff members on assessment and institutional effectiveness matters
  • Strong working knowledge of specialized and regional accreditations and certifications, including SACSCOC (Knowledge of ABET is preferred but not required)
  • Ability to develop and assess student learning outcomes for a variety of learning modalities, including applied learning contexts outside the traditional classroom, using a variety of direct and indirect assessment methods
  • Fluency in report writing, as well as oral and graphic presentation of findings
  • Facility with assessment management software and tools, to include: MS Office applications, statistical analysis software, and online survey development tools
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
